1st ESO ART. Unit 1.4 Drawing procedures and techniques

Every year we practice drawing proportions with plants, flower, trees and landscapes. We use to go this days to Valdelatas forest to draw in the nature and everybody learns a lot practicing from nature. This is one of the things you always say when I ask you what do you want from this class: I want to draw better!

This year the situation is different, but everything in life give us a new opportunity. Let's focus on the windows that shows us the rest of the world:

As you see there are many different techniques to draw and color doing a masterpiece. Whenever you start drawing don't try to focus in what you think is perfect and live your hand doing the figures, there is not one way to represent reality.

In the book you can see the step for producing a drawing: Unit 1 page 10 to 13 and How to do blocking in and shading.

The main steps are:
  1. Defining the frame.
  2. Locate the elements of the composition in your paper.
  3. Determine the proportions of the shapes comparing measures by holding a pencil at eye level with your elbow locked.
  4. Blocking making basic geometric shapes to find the basic shapes of the drawing.
  5. Finally we draw the details.
Here you have a few examples of face drawing steps, some more realistic and one comic manga style. As an extra activity copy this faces following the steps and send them to me.

If you are drawing a person, you need to start with the sketch, here you have a comic version:

Exercise: You have two options in this task:

  • Option 1: Follow the video tutorial and draw the figure. Then send me the drawing by email.(this gives you 8 points).
  • Choose a window in your house and draw someone looking through it (it can be your mother, father, sister..), then send me the drawing by email. You can search for inspiration in the presentation at the beginning of the post or in the drawing below. (This gives you 10 points).

Extra bonus: Cut your drawing and do a photo of it in reality playing with perspective. It doesn't matter that your hand appears in the image. Use your imagination, you have examples here:
